Home made Spaghetti meat sauce is a hearty pasta dish that the whole family can enjoy!

We love to enjoy this dish with some fresh baked French bread. The bread can be plain or you can turn it into garlic bread. All you need is a bit of butter and garlic salt (you can use fresh pressed garlic and a sprinkle of salt too). This goes well with a light salad on the side.

Kitchen Tools Needed:

  • Dutch Oven: We use a 7-8 quart sized Dutch oven for the sauce. It allows us to have ample space for all the ingredients as well as extra room at the top so there is no chance of it overflowing.  If you don’t have a dutch oven, no worries!  Use any pot you have on hand that is around this size.
  • Chef’s Knife: a multi-purpose knife that you use to slice, dice, and chop. Usually medium to long in length.
  • Food safe storage container: We use a tall, cylindrical food safe container. Make sure to fully wash and dry the container before use (especially if it is new).

Ingredients:

  • Pork Fat: I use store bought pork fat in a jar.  It has a cleaner taste and it also won’t alter with the flavor.  You can usually find it near the oil section of your grocery store. Also, if you can’t find pork fat, vegetable oil is a good alternative.
  • Ground beef:We typically use 85%/15% organic
  • Spaghetti Rigati Noodles: The ridge on this pasta helps to hold the sauce within the pasta.  If you can’t find this type, your favorite regular spaghetti noodles are good!
  • Tomato Paste: The paste has basil, garlic, and oregano already in it which makes it a perfect complement in this sauce.
  • Stewed Tomatoes: We use stewed tomatoes with basil and oregano.
  • Garlic: Use fresh cloves. We love the garlic taste in our house.  If your not as big of a fan of garlic, its okay to reduce by half.
  • Onion: One whole yellow onion can be medium to large in size. Though if on the larger sizer use only half the onion.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: This gives a bit of that umami flavor!
  • Light Brown Sugar: Adds a bit of sweetness.
  • Salt & Black Pepper: To taste.
  • Spices: Italian seasoning, ground thyme,
  • Water: Filtered water

How to make the Spaghetti Meat Sauce:

  1.  Gather your ingredients!
  2. Take the skin off your garlic and use a garlic press.  When using a garlic press make sure that you are using it directly over the bowl you are using to keep the garlic in until you cook it.  This way you keep all the juices together.
  3. For the onion, you want to chop into small/medium pieces.  Not too big or too small.
  4. With your pot on the stove, set your burner to medium heat.  Add in the Pork fat and let this heat up.
  5. When the fat (or oil) is heated, put your chopped onions in (when you start putting your ingredients in, you want to hear a sizzle). You’ll want to cook the onions until just before translucent, about 5 minutes.
  6. Add in your garlic and cook for 1 min. Be careful not to burn the garlic!
  7. Now you’ll add in your 1 pound of ground beef.
  8. Add in 1 tsp of thyme, 1 tbsp of Italian seasoning, a pinch salt and pepper.
  9. Combine everything in your pot until your meat is browned and ingredients are well mixed together.
  10. Once the meat is browned, add in your stewed tomatoes, and tomato paste and stir.
  11. When everything is combined, add in the Worcestershire sauce, light brown sugar, as well as the remaining 1 tsp of Thyme, and 1 tbsp of Italian seasoning.
  12. Let this simmer for about 30 min at least to let all the flavors combine. If you feel the sauce is a bit watery, let it cook for at least an hour or more until you get the right consistency you are looking for.  Keep in mind the longer the sauce simmers, the more the flavors will combine!
  13. While the sauce is simmering Bring a separate pot of water to a boil.  Add in the noodles and cook per the packages cooking recommendations.
  14. When the noodles are done, place a handful on a plate, top with the meat sauce and enjoy!
