These Candied Sweet Potato recipe, is a fun, sweet dish our kids enjoy every year!
Our kids look forward to this dish every year at Thanksgiving time because it’s a delicious, sweet side to go with the Turkey and stuffing. The toasted marshmallows sitting on melted butter and brown sugar create a delectable frosting to the sweet, baked yams below.
Kitchen Tools Needed:
- Baking Sheet: Use a half size baking sheet (13”x18”)
- Square Casserole Baking Dish: 8” or 2 qt in size. Needs to have a little bit of depth. You don’t want to use a baking sheet for the final bake.
- Aluminum Foil: Use this to cover the bottom of the pan. Makes for easier cleanup!
- Fork: This is to pierce the yams prior to baking
- Chef’s Knife: a multi-purpose knife that you use to slice, dice, and chop. Usually medium to long in length.
Ingredients:
- Sweet Potato: Large, whole sweet potatoes. These are orange in color.
- Butter: Use the stick butter
- Light Brown Sugar
- Mini Marshmallows
How to make the Candied Yams:
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (218°C)
- Wash and dry the sweet potatoes to get off any dirt and debris that was left on them.
- Place the sweet potatoes on a cutting board (for stability) and pierce 3-4 times with a fork. Be careful not to poke yourself!
- Put the sweet potatoes on your baking sheet and place in the oven for 1 hour or until fork tender. You want to be able to easily slide your fork in with no resistance.
- Once the sweet potatoes are done, set aside to cool down before handling them. Approximately 1 hour (If I know I’m going to be using my oven for other things, I will bake the sweet potatoes in the morning. This way they will be cooled and ready closer to when we want to eat).
- When you are ready to put the dish together, preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C)
- With the sweet potatoes cooled, you can now remove the skins. They should easily peel off.
- Then cut butter into, about, ½ -inch cubes and place in the square baking dish. This part is really your preference (if you want bigger pieces or smaller).
- Evenly distribute the butter around the sweet potatoes.
- Sprinkle the light brown sugar, then top with mini marshmallows.
- Put in the oven for about 20 minutes. You want the yams to be hot, butter and sugar melted, and the marshmallows browned on top.
- Remove from the oven, let cool for about 5 min (so you don’t burn yourself).
- Enjoy! (please be careful as this dish will be hot!)
